2012 “Summer of Pu Jiang” BBQ will be held in August. Please mark your calendar to join this biggest event of the year, co-hosted by six Shanghai alumni associations: FDAANC, SJTU-SV, ECNUAA, ECUSTAA, SUTCMAA and TJUAASFB. Summer BBQ has become a popular tradition among our alumni and friends, with a history over a decade.

Over 300 people attend this event each year at Rengstorff Park in Mountain View, centered in Silicon Valley.  It is a great opportunity to enjoy the summer, relax your body and mind, catch up with old friends, make new ones, and to have fun!

Highlights:
  • Delicious food including beef, chicken, Korea BBQ and fruits.
  • Yu Lan Cup Volleyball Tournament with teams is from SJTU-SV, FDAANC and other fellow alumni associations will be opened at the events.
  • The Pu Jiang Cup Tug-Of-War game is the best exacting at the BBQ.
  • Pinyada, water balloon tired race and water melon eating race for both kids and adults.

Starting your own business is an exhilarating yet overwhelming experience. Entrepreneurs don’t have the time to read a how-to guide, but they do need the fundamentals presented succinctly and directly. This talk comes from the speakers’ 20 years of experience in working with, teaching, and advising several hundred entrepreneurs. Short and to the point, the workshop offers practical, powerful information for anyone thinking about starting a business.

Perhaps you still have a day job and are contemplating launching your own company or perhaps you have lots of ideas and are wondering which one is most likely to succeed. This simple but thorough seven-step method will answer your most essential questions. The questions that your investors will soon be asking you! Save yourself thousands of dollars and two years of your life before you plunge into your startup.

We will work with participants on their one-minute acclerating elevator pitch and fine tune how they present their ideas and seek customer feedback. A fine-tuned elevator pitch is the first step in attracting investors and generating customer interest.

About Speakers

David Lane is the Partner at Onset Ventures. Over the past 23 years, David Lane has created, built and financed start-up companies, which has resulted in multiple successful public offerings and acquisitions. He has directly managed venture capital funds totaling in excess of $2 Billion.

At ONSET, David specializes in cloud-enabling infrastructure software, SaaS, information security, healthcare IT, mobile solutions and commercializing disruptive IT technologies developed at leading research universities. He currently works with the following portfolio companies: AuthenTec, Truviso and Vindicia.

Prior to becoming a managing director of ONSET, David co-founded Diamondhead Ventures and led the firm’s investments in Danger (acquired by Microsoft), Entercept Security Technologies (acquired by McAfee) and UPEK (acquired by AuthenTec). Before Diamondhead, he was a senior venture capital investment officer at the Harvard Management Company, where he focused on making direct investments in seed to later stage opportunities in the IT and life science sectors. David’s other investments include: Applied Immune Sciences (IPO), Harmonic (IPO), Kofax Image Products (IPO), TriQuint Semiconductor (IPO), NexGen (IPO), Quidel (IPO), Viewlogic Systems (IPO) and Harbridge Merchant Services (acquired by First Data Corporation).

David earned a B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Southern California and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. He serves on the University of Southern California Engineering School;s Board of Counselors, the Engineering School Dean’s industry advisory board as well as several non-profit boards.

Naeem is the president and CEO of Bitzer Mobile, a company that provides a platform for enterprise data mobility. He is also a faculty member at the University of California Berkeley Haas School of business. He has taught entrepreneurship and New Venture Finance since 2005.

Naeem started his own business at the age of 26 and subsequently went on to start, or work at, six startups. His first job out of Brown University with a degree in electrical engineering was to design chips and electronic systems. Twenty years, two kids, one IPO and three CEO stints later, he founded Startup-Advisor, a company focused on educating and advising entrepreneurs on all aspects of starting and running a business (www.Startup-Advsior.com ).

Naeem works frequently with the US State Department in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship across the world and was invited to the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship in Washington, DC to participate in a dialogue about starting an entrepreneurial ecosystem worldwide. He is on the International advisory board for the North African initiative at the Aspen Institute. He has travelled to 76 countries to understand cultures and how business is done and considers himself a global citizen.

About Speakers:

Tim Wilson, General Partner, Artiman Ventures

Between 2001 and 2011, Tim was a General Partner at Partech International. He continues to represent Partech and serves on the boards of Invensense (NYSE:INVN), Prysm, Five9s, LedEngin, Array Converter, and Acco Semiconductor. Previous investments include Teknovus (Broadcom) and Ario Data (Xyratek).

Between 1997 and 2001, Tim was the Chief Marketing Officer for Digital Island (NASDAQ: ISLD) a Partech portfolio company. The company was acquired in 2001 for $350M. Prior to Digital Island, Tim was a General Manager at Lucent Technology where he led the international voice communications product management team (now Avaya) with P&L for product lines generating over $2B in annual sales. Before Lucent, Tim held a variety of senior management positions within AT&T (North America and Australia) and AT&T Bell Labs from 1983-1995.

Tim graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Bowdoin College receiving his undergraduate degree in Physics. He received his MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business where he was named a Fuqua Scholar.

Bill Reichert – Managing Director, Garage Technology Venture

Bill Reichert has over 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur and an operating executive. Since joining Garage in 1998, Bill has focused on early-stage information technology and materials science companies. He sits on the Boards of CaseStack, WhiteHat, ClearFuels, cFares, and ThermoCeramix. Prior to Garage, Bill was a co-founder or senior executive in several venture-backed technology startups, including Trademark Software, The Learning Company, and Academic Systems. Earlier in his career, he worked at McKinsey & Company, Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., and the World Bank. Bill earned a B.A. at Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Stanford University. He was a founding board member and a Chairman of the Churchill Club, and a Charter Member of the Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs. Currently he is the Chairman of the Small Fund Roundtable of the VC Taskforce and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Shawn Douglass, Managing Director, EMC Ventures

Shawn is Managing Director at EMC Ventures, where he is looking to make strategic investments in Big Data/Analytics, Cloud, Security and Disruptive Technology and Business Models.

Prior to his role at EMC Ventures, Shawn led the Advanced Technology Ventures Group in the Office of the CTO, where he was responsible for Identification, Evaluation and Development of opportunities to accelerate EMC’s growth via High-Leverage Technology Incubations, strategic investments, partner-based technology collaborations and the leverage of emerging technologies to foster and drive innovation for EMC. Prior to leading ATV, Shawn was responsible for Global Technology Partner Strategy.

Before joining EMC ,Shawn held positions with managed services provider leaders, LoudCloud and Digital Island where he was responsible for automating all aspects of the production operations including component provisioning/maintenance, problem detection/resolution and perimeter/core security in global distributed environment, supporting aggressive uptime and SLA’s in an ultra scalable, multi-tenant, secure infrastructure.

David Koehn, Board Members, Sand Hill Angels

David has over 15 years experience focused on entrepreneurship and innovation. David has founded several start-ups including one focused on ecotourism and another focused on enterprise mobility. David has also assisted many start-ups in their growth. David has helped start-ups in many ways from assuming the CEO role and closing a series C, to transforming their business models and market approaches, to acting as a senior advisor.

David has worked for AvantGo, Tailwind (Founder), DKI (Principal), & Saba. In all of his roles across all of the companies he has worked for David has focused on building net new products, solutions and services. David pioneered mLearning at AvantGo. At Tailwind David delivered a product for consuming enterprise online learning and applications while offline. At DKI, David helped dozens of clients conceptualize, productize, and take to market a wide range of media, social, unified communications, and games using the cloud, Facebook and mobile as the platform.

David received his Bachelors Degree from Carnegie Mellon, an MFA from the University of Florida, an M.Ed (TFA Cert) from the University of Alaska and is pursuing his MBA through Johns Hopkins.

David looks to invest in start-ups focused on disrupting inefficient markets. He targets, in particular, start ups focused on mid-market social enterprise, location-based solutions for small business, and real-time analytics/intelligence businesses.

Mr. Liu’s practice focuses on general corporate matters, intellectual property transactions and equity and debt financings.

Mr. Liu serves as U.S. corporate counsel to numerous U.S. and off-shore start-up and emerging growth companies. His intellectual property practice includes intellectual property protection and licensing, reseller and distribution agreements, joint development agreements, trademark filings and the transfer of trademarks, patents, copyrights and other intellectual property rights. He has represented clients on transactions involving foreign jurisdictions such as the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China.

Mr. Liu has significant software engineering experience working for several Bay Area companies serving the technology and financial technology sectors.

Prior to joining Fenwick & West, Mr. Liu was a corporate partner with Charter Law Group, a corporate boutique firm in Silicon Valley representing companies and investors in general corporate matters, business transactions, finance, intellectual property rights and mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Liu received his undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and English and a graduate degree in Engineering Economic Systems from Stanford University. He also received an honorary graduate degree from the Department of Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He went on to complete his legal education at the University of California at Davis.
